Cincinnati exerts a tremendous pull on Kentuckians from Lexington, Louisville, the Blue Grass and the Mountains. It offers the only pro sports teams within a reasonable driving distance in the Reds and the Bengals. It offers the best zoo, the best amusement park, the best professional theatre, the best concerts and the best museum in the region. Xavier University, the University of Cincinnati and Miami of Ohio draw students from Kentucky. Many corporations operating in Kentucky, from groceries to coal to railroads to banks, have their regional offices here, meaning executives and sales repscome often for meetings and other official business. Its major hotels are attractive for weekend getaways to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions. And it hosts popular events, like the Tall Stacks Festival with over 100 classic riverboats churning in from Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Memphis and New Orleans (see below). Cincinnati cuisine is a blend of Midwest Rural, German, Italian, Riverboat, Blue Grass and Appalachian. Since before the Civil War it's also been the home of famous breweries. In the last several decades, Cincinnatians have gone away to culinary schools, gotten experience as chefs in other regions, then come home to inject new ideas into the local restaurant scene. It's a lively and ever changing parade of neighborhood, downtown and college campus eateries.

In 1840 Germans represented 40% of Cincinnati's population. They were most famous for the breweries they built, but they also founded factories and businesses and had a huge impact on the city's culture. German food is still important here, and Mecklenburg Gardens is the best German restaurant. It's been here since 1865 and is as much a museum as a place to eat, with its heavy timbers, stained glass windows, fireplaces, mahogany bar and wood panelling. They serve 95 beers, mostly German. Appetizers include Soft Pretzels, Sauerkraut Balls and Reuben Eggrolls. The Sauerkraut and Black Forest are the best Salads, and you must order cups of the Bier Cheese and Mock Turtle Soups. There are sandwiches like Chicken Schnitzel and Sauerbraten, and "Small Plate Menu" of Bier Braised Ribs and Potabello Spatzel. But Entrees are why you come : Chicken Strudel, Weiner Schnitzel, Goulash, Jager Schnitzel, Saurbraten and Braised Shank. There's a special Sausage menu of Bratwurst, Mettwurst and Goettawurst. Of course there are the Sides : Sauerkraut, Red Cabbage, Hot Slaw and German Potato Salad. Save room for the Apple Raisen Strudel, famous since 1870. Mecklenburg Gardens
